Sir Isaac Newton once stated that he had been able to see so far into the world of science, and contribute so much, because he had been ā€œstanding on the shoulders of giantsā€. He was making reference to the idea that he had not done everything on his own; that many of the ideas he had were based on, or were improvements of, work that other scientists had done before him. This is even truer of the work that scientists do today than it was four hundred years ago for Newton. Just as Newton studied and learned from the work or scientists who had lived before him, in this assignment you will have an opportunity to research the life, work, and scientific contributions of one of the scientists listed below. Your report should include the following information:

  • Date/location of birth/death.
  • A brief biographical summary (their childhood years, education, personal life, family).
  • Major contributions to science as a whole and/or to physics specifically.

Your report should be about 300 words in length. You may choose to research the life and work of any one of the scientists below or any other scientist you choose (past or current) subject to the approval of your teacher.

Scientists:

Sir Isaac Newton, Galileo Galilei, Blaise Pascal, James Watt, James Joule, Aristotle, Albert Einstein, Johannas Keplar, Archimedes, Leonardo da Vinci

Be sure that the work you present is entirely your own. You must reference all sources that you have used to obtain information about your scientist of choice.
